 Misadventures in Prosthodontics

Professor Callum Youngson, Liverpool School of Dentistry

Prof Callum Youngson qualified from Dundee in 1982, and then worked at Leeds Dental School, latterly as head of conservative dentistry. He is now head of the School of Dentistry and honorary consultant in restorative dentistry at The University of Liverpool. He has held several roles in national committees within restorative dentistry and sits on the Dental Schools’ Council. He is active in Royal College of Surgeons’ committees and is also an examiner in MRD RCS (Edin) and (BDS) at Peninsula and Cork Dental Schools. His teaching and research interests include diagnosis of complex pain, fixed prosthodontics, managing toothwear, dental education and widening the training opportunities for the dental team.

This study day will cover many aspects of day to day prosthodontics. By the end you should be able to:

  1. Recognise the patient factors that indicate success is going to be difficult to achieve – ‘wishes’ versus ‘expectations’
  2. Describe how the tooth preparation requirements for aesthetic crowns and veneers of different materials affect the underlying tooth tissue and pulp
  3. Plan for the loads that restorations will be subjected to and which materials & designs can withstand this best
  4. Discuss the relative prognoses of teeth prepared for conventional crowns and bridges
  5. Estimate the likely longevity of various designs of resin-bonded and conventional fixed prostheses
  6. Choose the least invasive restoration design, bearing in mind the need to restore aesthetics and function.

The meeting will be held at The Palace Hotel, Torquay. Registration with tea, coffee and pastries will be at 8.30am, and the meeting will start at 9.30am. It will finish at 5pm with our customary raffle. Details of accommodation if required and directions can be found on their web site
